Meati - Filling Key Nutrient Gaps in Your Diet

Publication Date: June 30, 2020

We all know that there are endless benefits to eating a more plant-based diet; from the positive impact on the environment to the positive impacts on the body to animal welfare, the benefits list of plant-centric diet trails on…

But being the health-conscious consumers that we are, what we don’t love is a plant-based diet that is devoid of critical nutrients or filled with heavily-processed and artificial ingredients. If you’re one for meat or dairy alternatives, you may feel like your options are just that, since many of the alternatives currently stocked in stores and being marketed to you today contain unfamiliar ingredients.

What’s more, just like any “diet” or way of eating, there’s always a chance that nutritional deficiencies can creep in, since following a specific diet can mean cutting out certain types of foods. Plant-based eaters and meat-eaters alike are often faced with nutritional gaps, even if they don’t know it.

That got us thinking… “what if we could have a sustainable, tasty meat alternative that actually helped fill the nutrient deficiencies people faced, but didn’t bring a boatload of bad stuff with it?”

Thus, Meati was born! Meati provides minimally-processed, fungi-based meats that are made from our pure mycelium (more on mycelium meat here, if you need to be brought up-to-speed on the magic of our fabulous main ingredient). The type of fungi that Meati uses is so incredible that it allows us to bring nutrient-dense, meatless meat to the table that’s full of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals but devoid of highly processed ingredients. Sounds too good to be true? We feel that way sometimes, too, so let’s dive into the details and see how Meati stacks up.

HOW MEATI CAN FILL PROTEIN GAPS IN YOUR DIET

It’s important to get enough protein in your diet, but it’s extra important to get the right types of protein. Proteins are made up of building blocks called amino acids, and there are 20 amino acids in total. Since 11 are produced naturally by the body, that leaves 9 essential amino acids that you need to obtain from your food to optimally fuel your body.

And while our bodies are capable of using different amino acids in incomplete proteins that we eat to build proteins in our bodies, and there are some plant-based sources of complete proteins to eat, it’s not easy on a plant-based diet to make sure your body is getting everything it needs.

That’s why we’re thrilled that Meati’s Fungi-Based Steak has a whopping 17 grams of complete protein in a single 3 oz serving! So when you dive into a juicy, Meati Steak, you can be assured that Meati is providing your body with the protein it needs. When compared to animal protein, Meati has just as much (or more!) of each of the nine essential amino acids. Talk about a planet-friendly protein punch!

HOW MEATI CAN FILL NUTRIENT GAPS IN YOUR DIET

There's a long list of important nutrients that are typically lacking in the American diet, regardless if you eat animal products or not. For example, it is estimated that over 90% of Americans are lacking adequate fiber in their diets, and less than 3% of Americans achieve the recommended daily intake of potassium. Watching your zinc intake is also important, as it can support a healthy immune system.

One nutrient of particular importance is vitamin B12, since this incredible vitamin helps support bone and blood health, but is challenging to get enough of on a plant-based diet. In most meat alternatives on the market, vitamin B12 can’t be found, but thanks to Meati’s mycelium, Meati’s got you covered with 90% of your recommended daily value of B12! And it doesn’t stop there; Meati also offers B1, B2, B3 and B5, which means you’re helping to support the building blocks of your health.

MEATI’S NUTRITION PANEL – LET’S BREAK IT DOWN

All it takes is a quick glance at our ingredient and nutrition panel to feel good about eating Meati. A Meati Steak is packed with 17 grams of complete protein, and contains 2 grams of net carbs, making it perfect for a plant-based keto diet, or for anyone looking for a low-carb, meatless meat. Vegan? No problem, our Meati Steak uses no animal byproducts.

And anyone else looking for more potassium, zinc, and fiber in their diet? Those are three more areas where Meati shines. Rather than grabbing a banana for potassium, next time eat a single serving of Meati to get 10% of your recommended Daily Value (RDV). You’ll also be getting 70% of your RDV for zinc, and almost one third of your RDV for fiber (steak has zero grams of fiber...just sayin’…)!

And while you can feel good about things Meati is rich in, you can also feel good about things Meati is lower in, like sodium and cholesterol. When it comes to sodium, a serving of Meati Steak clocks in at 170mg total, while other meat alternatives (and even real deli meats!) average almost three times as much; about 450mg per serving! Meati also has ZERO cholesterol, unlike steak, making it a heart-healthy choice.

THE JUNK WE’RE LEAVING OUT

The list of harmful and unnecessary ingredients that we leave out of our Meati products is a LOT longer than our clean, simple, and short ingredient list. Contrary to many plant-based meat alternatives out there, our Meati Steak is free from things like artificial preservatives, fillers and binding agents, GMOs, and artificial food colorings. We choose to skip these questionable ingredients because our products just don't need this stuff in order to taste good.

Meati’s fungi-based meats have the right taste, texture, and nutrition to satisfy that occasional (or frequent - no judging here) meaty-craving. Our few ingredients work together in harmony to create a delicious meat substitute that you can trust and enjoy without reservation. And that’s the Meati Mission: to help feed the world nutritious protein, forever.
