What is Mycelium?

What is Mycelium? What is Mycelium?

What is all the buzz about mycelium? Mycelium is a microscopic, thread-like structure (think of it like thin roots!) produced by fungi. It’s basically an all-natural superhero and is a great source of natural protein.

Our Planet Needs a Superhero

By the year 2050, our planet will need to make room for about 3.4 billion more people. As a result, the global food demand for meat, the most resource-intensive food, is expected to double. Yikes! The dilemma was clear. How can we produce more tasty, nutritious protein without depleting our already scarce natural resources?
We need a superhero to save the day.

Mycelium’s source of power

If you are a fan of a plant-powered diet, imagine eating a food that powers plants! You can think of mycelium like long and super slim roots. Just like trees extend their roots down into the soil to find nutrients, fungi create underground mycelium to seek out water and nutrients to save the day. Our Superhero is so good at what it does (super roots, if you will), it even provides extra nutrients to help plants grow healthy and strong.

What makes Meati’s mycelium so nutritious?

Just like we eat other roots for nutrition (carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips) eating our mycelium is über good for your body. It’s naturally full of complete protein, fiber, and other nutrients that make it the superfood our founders were searching for. As a result, Meati doesn’t need to add any ingredients outside of the simple, whole food ingredients chefs use to boost Meati’s flavor (who doesn’t love a good marinade?!).

Meati’s fast growing mycelium

And since Meati’s mycelium is super fast-growing (so fast our mycelium can go from “seed” to your plate in less than 18 hours), and uses very few resources, we can produce lots of juicy meat for everyone! It’s part of how we plan to help feed the world.
